ABOUT THE 100 SMITTIE PROJECT
The 100 Smitties project started in 2019. I've been making ceramics for a while and I felt the urge to focus on a specific project. I've read somewhere that in Japan, when you want to be a master potter, to really master the skill you have to make 1000 ramen noodle bowls. Immediately the idea to make 100 of the same sculptures popped into my mind.
This also reminded me of a dream I once had. When I started making ceramics in 2012, I lived in Portugal and I volunteered at a ceramic department of a social institute. They produced touristic decorations to cover the costs of the social project for mentally disabled people. I imagined to produce sculptures that make happy and give joy, and also give a quirkyness to a home which would make it more intresting.
So, here I am. Making 100 Smitties in my free time. In time my skills in making these sculptures and their cute grumpy little faces have developed. And, my dream of making a production line of The Smitties is becoming a reality and I couldn't be more excited.
